The Pickering Town Centre has a highly visible location east of Toronto on Canada’s busy Highway 401. PETROFF has been providing planning, architectural and interior design services at the centre since 2008. Recently, PETROFF’s collaboration with the developer: 20 Vic and City of Pickering focused on the progressive transformation of this regional Shopping Centre into a mobility and urban hub. The introduction of retail and restaurants framing existing streets, reconfiguration of parking areas to include urban landscape and covered pedestrian walkways and the opening of Durham and Centennial College connection with the GO station, speak to this mixed-use vision.

The 2009 full renovation added warmth and comfort via new ceilings with wood paneling and large carpeted lounge areas and introduced major upgrades to mall circulation (new elevator, bridge and stair0 and to all entrance. It saw the creation of an integrated branding strategy that forged a singular identity for this retail destination. Inspired by the existing tulip-shaped columns, a stylized leaf motif was adopted as the iconic element in the centre’s design. Working this motif into a number of diverse interior and exterior elements has resulted in the creation of a unique space that provides patrons with a sophisticated shopping experience.
