The existing site, located at the north-east corner of Steeles Ave. and Kennedy Rd. being a car oriented, low density, disjointed development is transformed to an active Urban Centre.
A new integrated development becomes an iconic part of Markham that reinforces the role of this site as a destination area, functioning as a pedestrian friendly environment, animates the streets, draws tourists, serves residents and creates a memorable, distinctive Cityscape and Landmark Gateway to Markham.
It was planned in 2 Phases. In the First Phase: The two levels of existing mall are extended north and south and three bridges connect Mall to the new Remington Centre. The larger units anchor the North side of the mall and the south is anchored by four highly visible entrance courts, nodes of vertical circulation, gathering places and also way finding markers. The main entrances are located at the most active corners of the building: the Steeles Kennedy intersection and the access to the site across Remington Centre.
Retail and Restaurants, seating areas and Cafés overlooking the street provide activity, an animated streetscape and vibrant atmosphere. The multiple entrances addressing the street and the transparency of storefronts and create visual connection between exterior an interior.
The emphasis is on quality materials, street lights, landscape, public art and urban furniture define pedestrian scale. The Centre is served by two new U/G parking connected with the existing and three upper parking levels.
Phase 2 is adding the high mass of the Hotel at the Steeles & Kennedy corner.
There is a firm commitment to follow the LEED Principles and pursue good sustainability practice.
