The renovation and adaptive reuse project converts a historically designated ‘Atmosphere Theatre’ built in 1927 into a large 2 story Shoppers Drug Mart without compromising the form and atmosphere of the original theatre. Mural details, decorative arches and plaster pilasters, domed ceiling and 30’ vaulted ceiling are only a few of the historical elements that are preserved in this building. Partnership Architects worked closely in collaboration with the City of Toronto, as well as the Toronto Historical Board to ensure the success of this building to stay current and adaptive while retaining its historical details and presence in the community.

While adapting the Shoppers Drug Mart layout inside the store, the grandeur of the building reveals itself gradually. The original low ceiling in the entry leads to the lobby’s restored domed ceiling and essential shopping needs, and beyond that soars the 30’ vaulted ceiling painted sky blue overtop of the Enhanced Beauty Boutique. The stage, the focal point of the theatre, is now showcasing the fragrance department, while still adorning the original stage curtains. The original sloped floor is kept as ramps down either side of main space, referring back to its heritage, while fixtures are set on platforms to utilize the space as well. Upstairs where the old projector still resides is the pharmacy where fixtures along the walls are kept low to showcase the mouldings on the walls and vaulted ceiling. Views from here look down onto the Beauty Boutique, and offer a full view of the theatre & its uniqueness of the space.
